The ‘How To…’ Series - What are they all about?

We’ve introduced a new type of series to Learning for Life… the ‘How To’ series!

But what is it? Why have we introduced it? And how many of these new series will there be? Let’s explain, taking our upcoming series ‘How To… Be Healthy’ as an example.

Five individuals all wearing branded Learn and Thrive t-shirts, in white, green, and blue, while behind the scenes filming the new Learning for Life video series.

Three of the participants of the first part of the ‘How To… Be Healthy’ series behind the scenes. Left to right: Hannah from Move to the Groove; William and Alexandra from Down Syndrome North East sitting beside Marie Nesbit from ZenergiZe; Rowan from Tailfeather TV.

While it’s useful to be able to learn the theory behind why we need to be healthy, we want to also give practical examples of how our learners can be healthy. It’s one thing teaching about keeping fit, but it’s quite another to make it happen. The ‘How To……Be Healthy’ is here to help. Featuring people with Down’s syndrome and other learning needs, the young people can join in and see themselves reflected in the resources and videos they watch!

These videos are built to be fun and inclusive, and, as always, easy to do at home, school, or a community group! Making getting fit enjoyable for all children and young people with learning difficulties, with adaptive levels to suit different levels of fitness. Delivered in an accessible way that suits the visual learning strengths of our community.

Individuals with learning difficulties are statistically more likely to be overweight. This series will directly show ‘How To’ use exercise to keep fit, providing solutions to help counter this issue. These exercise videos give a wide range of exercise options, designed to spark love with one or more types of exercise that they can carry through to everyday life. Supporting well-being and weight management while having fun!

Our upcoming series ‘How To… Be Healthy’ is the first of it’s kind, providing free exercise videos with the Down’s syndrome community at their heart. These sessions vary, from strength sessions, to yoga and Zumba, and are taught by professionals. Some of these professionals, such as Tailfeather Dance and Hannah from MOve to the Groove, also have Down’s syndrome. Other videos all include members of the Down’s syndrome community. Inclusion is a key element of these new series.

On 15th May 2024, we will be releasing the ‘How To… Be Healthy’ series’. In the Being Healthy series, we discuss the three elements of being healthy: being active, eating well, and looking after ourselves. This first element, being active, is covered in the first release. This consists of 9 videos covering a wide range of different exercises.

Read the blog about the Being Healthy series, to see how this new series links.

We will be releasing the second and final parts are on their way, so keep an eye out for more information!
