What’s in How To… Healthy Eating?
We’re all about building skills for life.
Our Being Healthy series, is all about confidence in the kitchen. Building the real-world skills our community needs as they head into adulthood.
We’ve made a brand-new series called How To… Healthy Eating:
Making a range of healthy meals
Considering dietary restrictions
Teaching key kitchen skills and safety
Lee and Matt (videographers), Nic (Cook), Laura, Hannah, Jo (L&T Team), and Maya, Jess, and Tabitha - our awesome chefs!
Being able to prepare and cook your own meals is one of the main building blocks for independence.
But there’s more to this series than meets the eye.
Obesity is a big problem for individuals with learning disabilities. They are at a higher risk for so many reasons - thyroid issues, joint pain, hormonal differences, metabolism issues…
The list goes on.
We’re here to ensure that our community can take control in the kitchen - where they can support their overall health by eating well.
By teaching them tasty recipes, incorporating key skills and important safety points, they can keep themselves healthier.

What resources are in this series?
The first How To… we did had no resources, but this one does!
All the recipe cards for this series AND an Allergens and Dietary Requirements sheet are available in the How To… Healthy Eating Series Pack! That’s 9 recipes and 2 sheets… over 150 pages!
Plus - we’re giving all of our users the first four recipe cards totally free!
Who’s in the videos?
Nic Ryan, founder of Bexley Kids School of Cookery has been the lead partner on this series. She has provided us with the yummy recipes that we cover, and features in the videos herself! She is joined by a group from our community - Tabitha, Jessica, Maya, Bethan, Alfie, and Oscar. They all work alongside Nic, each other, or on their own across the videos, showcasing a range of different skills and proving that everyone can learn to cook!
We were also lucky enough to have our Community Cooking Day ahead of this filming, so that we could talk directly to our community about what they wanted to learn to cook. This way, we could make sure their favourite meals were included so that they can take away recipes they love to cook. You can see more about their input here.
Where does this fit in the curriculum?
We use the curriculum as a skeleton for all of our content. But we always want to create series which provide real-life skills, so we have gone beyond the curriculum with this series. That’s the joy of Learning for Life!
